How do I start as a closer? The most important 8 questions and answers.

You have heard about the activity “closing” or the profession “closer” and are interested in it? We have collected the eight most important questions and answers for you.

What does a closer do?

A closer transforms interested parties into buyers and customers. He or she “closes interested parties”. This means, the closer conducts a sales talk with a prospective buyer, e.g. by telephone or video conference tool (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, …). In this conversation the closer tries to convince the prospect of the benefits of the product, so that the prospective buyer decides within this talk to buy the product. This is how a “ deal“, the purchase or sale, is created.

You receive the leads, the interested parties with whom you have the sales conversations (also called “closing calls“) from your contractor/employer. The employer uses a system with which they generate (collects) leads. As a classic closer you have nothing to do with this process.

Closers are employed on a permanent basis or freelance. If they are employed on a freelance basis, they usually receive a commission per transaction. Often this is between 10 % – 20 % of the net sales. The amount of the commission is a matter of negotiation.

Is the job of a closer a serious profession?

Is the job as an insurance merchant or banker serious? We guess everyone has to judge that for themselves. We are of the opinion: Yes, the job of a closer or high-price telephone salesperson is a serious profession. However, you should check exactly what kind of products and services you sell for whom. Are these products and services you can stand behind? Do they have a value for the buyer? Is the product worth the price? Do you share the values and the philosophy of the company?

We cannot answer these questions. It is your task as a closer to check exactly what you sell and if you can identify yourself with the product and the company. We think that a position in sales (and in almost all other professions) is serious if all those involved have a strong advantage from the purchase / sale of the product: 1. The buyer: the product brings him/her further in life or business life in some way. 2. The seller: he / she increases the turnover through the sale. 3. You, as the closer: you earn a commission or secure your job if you are permanently employed.

When evaluating a commitment, employer/client, you should always check very carefully whether

  • all three parties actually benefit from a sale
  • price of a product and what you get for it are in a healthy ratio for the buyer
  • your efforts and your income are in a healthy ratio too.

Then we would say that it is a serious job.

How much can I earn as a closer?

Certainly one of the most interesting questions, but also one that is very difficult to answer. A difference must be made between freelance work and permanent positions.

From our experience, good freelance closers earn 4-digit sales in Euro or US Dollar per month at good jobs. Certainly there are also jobs where you can earn more than 10,000 € / $. These jobs do not fall from sky though. But yes, we know that you can also make 20,000 € / 20,000 $ a month as a closer. We have seen such monthly income billings.

If you would like to earn around 5,000 Euros or Dollars per month on a freelance basis, it is usually necessary to spend more than 20 hours per week, work for a renowned client with a good reputation that provides you with more than 40 leads per week.

Permanently employed closers often receive, in addition to their fixed salary, a variable, performance-based component. We do not have enough data to tell you what you can expect as a permanent closer. Of course, this also depends heavily on numerous factors such as your employer, your skills, your experience and your negotiation skills and the salary level in your country.

Do I have to complete a closer coaching / training program?

It depends on your individual situation. If you have been working in sales for 20 years, have completed dozens of training courses and know exactly how to sell high-priced products or services in a phone call, you will find your way into the closer job market even without a closer training. It is also clear that additional training will not harm you. We should all continue to train ourselves constantly.

If you haven’t sold high-priced products over the phone yet and you want to work in this field, you should consider a closer training. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to find a partner who trusts you with his warm leads. If you are open to cold calling, you often don’t need any training, just enough courage and stamina.

How long does such a closer training take?

Most closer trainings last about 4-12 weeks, depending on the provider and program. Note, however, that the main thing you learn here is the basics of high-priced telephone sales. It is absolutely essential that you practice the methods and techniques. This can be done in sparring sessions and will then be further improved and optimized in dozens and hundreds of sales calls.

Sale is also a matter of practice. The more often you do it, the better you become.

How do I start my work as a closer?

That depends a little bit on your individual life situation. Should you find yourself in a employment relationship, we recommend that you do not terminate this employment relationship immediately, but rather keep a cool head, be patient and draw up a plan.

Permanent employment as closer

Are you interested in a permanent position as a closer? It’s not a bad idea to start with a permanent position as a closer, especially for a certain time at the beginning. Here you have the security that you will get your money monthly and won’t get into financial difficulties. Please check if the company that wants to hire you can pay you and if you want to work there.

Do not start without a valid employment contract. Make sure that the salary will be paid on time and in the agreed amount.

Freelance work as a Closer

Many closers would like to work freelance. This is basically possible and many jobs are advertised for freelancer closers. Please don’t rely on a job alone or a verbal assurance that you will receive enough leads. Often companies cannot give such an assurance at all. And then you don’t know how many of the leads you will successfully close in the end.

The generation of leads (prospects) depends on numerous factors and cannot be predicted so easily. Never rely solely on verbal promises from a client. This can get you into financial difficulties.

Ideally, you should start a freelance job as a closer on a part-time basis. Maybe you have the possibility to start your closer career in addition to your main job. In the course of time, you can invest more time in your closer business while your revenues increase.

We would also recommend that you do not rely on one client alone, but rather divide your time between several clients, at least in the first phase. In this way, you reduce your risk and make yourself more independent from a company. If a company supplies you with numerous, well-qualified leads and you enjoy working with them, you can always increase your capacity there over time.

Is the job as a closer future-proof?

To answer this question, we should define “future-proof”. If we mean that you will still be able to work and live from your income as a closer in 5-10 years, we would answer the question with “yes!”. We know as little as anyone else how high-priced products and services will be sold in 20 years. It is quite possible that human telephone sellers will then increasingly face competition from machines or computer programs.

But this is true for many, and in the end for all professions. Nowadays, you should also think less in terms of professions and more in skills. The ability to sell high-priced products and services over the phone will definitely be in high demand for some years to come. We are quite sure of that.

We hope that this article will give you a good overview of the job as a closer as well as the first steps to enter that market. If you have any further questions, please leave us a comment under this post.

We are looking forward to your opinion.

Many greetings
